Airgas Inc., Radnor, PA, has acquired
Byrne Specialty Gases, Inc., a Seattle, WA-based distributor of specialty gases,
related equipment and cryogenic storage systems for the life sciences sectors in
the Pacific Northwest.
The acquired operations,
including two facilities in Seattle and Vancouver, WA,
employ 45 associates and generated more than $10 million in sales last year.
Airgas will run the business as a dedicated unit within Airgas Nor Pac, focused
on specialty gases and life science sectors in the Northwest. It is one of 13
regional companies within Airgas.

Nor Pac, said: “Founded by Daniel V. Byrne in 1984, Byrne has become a
nationally recognized leader in the life sciences and analytical laboratory
fields. This acquisition will significantly enhance our specialty gas business
in the region as well as nationally.”
Daniel Byrne started BSG in
1984 after working with Stirling Engine/Cryocooler Systems Division of
Mechanical Technology, Inc., Airco Industrial Gases, Inc. (now known as BOC
Gases), and Boeing. He earned a bachelor’s of science degree in mechanical
engineering from Tufts University and a master of science in mechanical
engineering from Stanford University.
Airgas Inc. through its subsidiaries,
is the largest U.S. distributor of industrial,
medical, and specialty gases, and related hardgoods, such as welding equipment
and supplies. Airgas is also the third-largest U.S. distributor of safety products, the largest
U.S. producer of nitrous oxide and
dry ice, the largest liquid carbon dioxide producer in the Southeast, and a
distributor of process chemicals, refrigerants, and ammonia products. Its 10,000
employees work in about 900 locations including branches, retail stores, gas
fill plants, specialty gas labs, production facilities and distribution
centers.
