July Housing Starts Down 1% from June

Single-family housing starts increased 1.7% over June figures to 490,000.

Housing starts were down 1% in July, compared to revised June rates, according to the latest figures released by the U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The rate of 581,000 is 37.7% below the July 2008 rate.
 
Single-family housing starts in July were at a rate of 490,000, 1.7% above the revised June figure of 482,000. The July rate for units in buildings with five units or more was 80,000.
 
Housing units authorized by building permits in July were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 560,000, 1.8% below the June rate and 39.4% below the July 2008. Single-family authorizations in July increased 5.8% from the June rate to 458,000. Authorizations of units in buildings with five units or more were at a rate of 84,000 in July.
 
Housing completions were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 802,000, 0.9% lower than the revised June estimate and 26.4% below the July 2008 rate.  Single-family housing completions in July were at a rate of 491,000, 4.1% below the revised June figure. The July rate for units in buildings with five units or more was 297,000.
