Compared with December 2013, January 2014 seasonally adjusted production in the construction sector grew by 1.5 percent in the euro area (EA17) and by 1.3 percent in the EU28, according to Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In December 2013, production in construction rose by 1.3 percent and 1.2 percent respectively.
Year-over-year, January production in construction increased by 8.8 percent in the euro area and by 7.3 percent in the EU28.
Compared with December 2013, January production in construction had the highest increases observed in Slovenia (up 22.4 percent), Spain (up 5.8 percent) and Germany (up 4.4 percent), and the largest decreases were observed in Romania (down 4.3 percent), Slovakia (down 3.9 percent) and France (down 2.2 percent).
Building construction grew by 1.7 percent in the euro area and by 1.6 percent in the EU28. Civil engineering fell by 1.2 percent in the euro area and 1.8 percent in the EU28.
Compared with January 2013, January 2014 production in construction had the largest increases registered in Slovenia (up 42.8 percent), Spain (up 17.6 percent) Hungary (up 15.9 percent) and Germany (up 14.1 percent), and the largest decreases in Portugal (down 14 percent), Romania (down 9.2 percent) and Italy (down 7.9 percent).
Year-over-year, building construction increased by 9.1 percent in the euro area and by 8.1 percent in the EU28. Civil engineering rose by 7.6 percent in the euro area and by 3.8 percent in the EU28.
