Compared with July, August seasonally adjusted production in the construction sector grew by 1.5 percent in the euro area (EA18) and by 0.5 percent in the EU28, according to first estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In July, production in construction grew by 0.3 percent and 0.4 percent respectively.
Compared with August 2013, production in construction fell by 0.3 percent in the euro area and by 0.8 percent in the EU28.
The sequential increase in the euro area is due to building construction rising by 1.4 percent and civil engineering by 2.1 percent. In the EU28, the increase is due to building construction rising by 0.6 percent and civil engineering by 0.1 percent.
Among Member States for which data are available, the highest increases in production in construction were observed in Spain (+2.7 percent), Romania (+2.5 percent) and France (+2.4 percent), and the largest decreases in the United Kingdom (-3.2 percent), Germany (-2 percent), Poland and Slovenia (both -1.8 percent).
The year-over-year decrease of 0.3 percent in production in construction in the euro area in August 2014 is due to civil engineering falling by 5.2 percent, while building construction rose by 0.9 percent. In the EU28, the decrease of 0.8 percent is due to civil engineering falling by 5.4 percent, while building construction rose by 0.4 percent.
Among Member States for which data are available, the largest decreases in production in construction were registered in Romania (-15.6 percent) and Portugal (-6.6 percent), and the highest increases in Slovenia (+27.6 percent), Spain (+22 percent) and Sweden (+9.4 percent).
