December Construction Production Falls in Europe

Declines were seen in both the euro area and the EU28.

Compared with November 2014, December seasonally adjusted production in the construction sector fell by 0.8 percent in the euro area (EA18) and by 0.5 percent in the EU28, according to Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

Compared with December 2013, production in construction fell by 3.5 percent in the euro area and by 0.5 percent in the EU28.

Average production in construction for the year 2014, compared with 2013, increased by 2 percent in the euro area and by 3 percent in the EU28.

Compared with November, December's decrease of 0.8 percent in production in construction in the euro area is due to building construction falling by 1 percent, while civil engineering grew by 1.7 percent. In the EU28, the decrease of 0.5 percent was driven by building construction falling by 0.9 percent, while civil engineering grew by 2.6 percent.

Among member states for which data are available, the largest month-to-month decreases in production in construction were observed in Hungary (-6.5 percent), the Czech Republic (-3.3 percent) and Germany (-2.9 percent), and the highest increases in Romania (7.2 percent), Italy (2.3 percent) and Poland (1 percent).

The year-over-year decrease of 3.5 percent in production in construction in the euro area in December 2014 was driven by building construction falling by 4.7 percent, while civil engineering grew by 1.4 percent. In the EU28, the decrease of 0.5 percent was due to building construction falling by 1.6 percent, while civil engineering grew by 3.8 percent.

Among member states for which data are available, the largest decreases in production in construction were registered in Slovakia (-9.8 percent), the Czech Republic (-7.8 percent), France (-7.5 percent), Italy (-5.2 percent) and Germany (-4.7 percent), and the highest increases in Romania (15 percent), Sweden (9.4 percent), Poland (4.8 percent), the United Kingdom (4.7 percent) and Slovenia (4.6 percent).
