Retail giant Walmart has announced plans to expand local pickup and delivery services for physical stores; extend Walmart Fulfillment Services to include large items, bulky and multi-box shipments; and introduce digital brand shops and shelves on its website, according to a company news release and industry reports.

The company also said that its Walmart Fulfillment Services — its third-party marketplace for sellers — will not charge sellers peak season storage fees for those who inbound by Oct. 1, according to a report from Supply Chain Dive.

According to Walmart, fulfillment improvements will reduce merchant costs and make shopping more convenient for customers. The company said sellers see a 50% increase in gross merchandise value when selling items through the service.

MDM’S SHIFT Conference, Sept. 18-20 in Denver, brings together distribution leaders to learn and network across topics of sales & marketing, digital transformation, data analytics and talent management. Find more info here.

“Walmart blazed a trail in pickup and delivery, perfecting the systems and technology needed to provide a great customer experience,” the company said in a statement. “Now we’re bringing this expertise to sellers by standing up local pickup and delivery for sellers who have physical stores. Customers can pick up their items directly or have same-day delivery through our last-mile delivery network. This will lower sellers’ fulfillment costs, create new ways to convert sales and delight customers along the way.”

Walmart also recently hosted its “Let’s Grow! 2023 Walmart Marketplace Seller Summit,” which took place in Las Vegas at the end of August. During the conference, Walmart announced that it has plans to open its Marketplace to sellers in Chile in 2024. The company already has existing markets in the U.S, Canada and Mexico.

In April, regulatory filings and media reports showed that Walmart planned cut more than 2,000 jobs at five of its U.S. eCommerce fulfillment centers to leverage automation amid layoffs.

In January, Walmart launched its new dedicated eCommerce site, Walmart Business, which tailors to small and medium business customers, the company said.
