The U.S. Census Bureau shared its monthly wholesale trade statistics for January 2024 sales and inventories on March 6.
Sales
The report showed that January sales for merchant wholesalers (except manufacturers’ sales branches and offices, seasonally adjusted, but not for price), were $657.2 billion, down 1.7% from the revised December level and down 1.5% year-over-year. December’s month-to-month figure was revised down from the preliminary estimate of up 0.7% to up 0.3%
Inventories
The report showed that January total inventories of wholesalers were $895.1 billion, down 0.3% from the revised December level and down 2.5% year-over-year. The December month-to-month figure was revised from down 0.1% to down 0.3%.
Inventories/Sales Ratio
The report showed that the January inventories-to-sales ratio for wholesalers was 1.36, up from December’s 1.34 and down from the 1.38 of a year earlier.
