U.S. Consumer Prices See Smallest Annual Rise Since Early 2021

Monthly, September's modest increase matched that of August and July.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics released its monthly Consumer Price Index Summary on Oct. 10, showing that its all-items index increased 2.4% for the 12 months ending September — the smallest annual gain since February 2021.

On a monthly basis, September’s all items index increased 0.2% — unchanged from August and July.

The index for shelter rose 0.2% in September vs. August, while the index for food increased 0.4%. Shelter and food contributed to over 75% of the monthly all items increase.

The index for all items less food and energy — known as core inflation — rose 0.3% in September, unchanged from August. Indexes that increased in September include: shelter, motor vehicle insurance, medical care, apparel and airline fares. Recreation and communication were among the indexes that decreased over the month.

On a year-over-year basis, September’s core inflation rose 3.3%. The year-over-year energy index decreased 6.8%, while the food index increased 2.3%.
