Manufacturing jobs increased by 36,000 in August after increasing by 16,000 in July, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
In August, construction employment increased by 28,000, following an increase of 6,000 in July. Employment among residential specialty trade contractors edged up by 12,000 over the month.
Overall, total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 156,000 in August. The unemployment rate, at 4.4 percent, and the number of unemployed persons, at 7.1 million, changed little in August.
