Total June exports were $183.2 billion and imports were $227.7 billion, according to the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, through the Department of Commerce. This resulted in a goods and services deficit of $44.5 billion, up $3.6 billion from May. June exports were up $0.6 billion from May, and June imports were up $4.2 billion.
The June increase in the goods and services deficit reflected an increase in the goods deficit of $3.8 billion to $66 billion and an increase in the services surplus of $0.3 billion to $21.5 billion.
Year-to-date, the goods and services deficit decreased $5.8 billion, or 2.3 percent, from the same period in 2015. Exports decreased $54.2 billion or 4.7 percent. Imports decreased $60 billion or 4.3 percent.
Exports of goods increased $0.5 billion and exports of services increased $0.1 billion. The increase in exports of goods mostly reflected increases in civilian aircraft ($1.1 billion) and consumer goods ($0.4 billion). The increase in exports of services mainly reflected increases in travel ($0.1 billion) and financial services ($0.1 billion).
Imports of goods increased $4.4 billion and imports of services decreased $0.2 billion. The increase in imports of goods mostly reflected an increase in industrial supplies and materials ($2.3 billion) and consumer goods ($1.9 billion).
