Compared with May 2014, seasonally adjusted production in the construction sector fell by 0.7 percent in the euro area (EA18) and by 0.3 percent in the EU28, according to first estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In May 2014, production in construction fell by 1.4 percent in both zones.
Production in construction fell by 2.3 percent in the euro area and by 0.5 percent in the EU28 compared to the same period one year ago.
The decrease of 0.7 percent in production in construction in the euro area in June 2014 compared with May 2014 is due to building construction falling by 0.9 percent and civil engineering by 0.5 percent.
In the EU28, the decrease of 0.3 percent is due to building construction falling by 0.5 percent and civil engineering by 0.2 percent.
The largest decreases in production in construction were observed in Hungary (-7.5 percent), Spain (-2.9 percent), Romania (-2.6 percent) and Slovakia (-2.3 percent), and the highest increases in Poland (+2.7 percent), Germany (+1.2 percent), the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom (both +1.1 percent).
The decrease of 2.3 percent in production in construction in the euro area in June 2014 compared with June 2013 is due to building construction falling by 2.0 percent and civil engineering by 3.4 percent.
In the EU28, the decrease of 0.5 percent is due to building construction falling by 0.2 percent and civil engineering by 2.7 percent.
The largest decreases in production in construction were registered in Romania (-13.1 percent), Portugal (-10.3 percent), Slovakia (-5.0 percent) and the Netherlands (-3.5 percent), and the highest increases in Slovenia (+28.7 percent), Hungary (+9.8 percent), Poland (+8.0 percent) and Spain (+6.8 percent).
