Compared with November, December seasonally adjusted production in the construction sector was down 0.2 percent in the euro area (EA19) and up 0.6 percent in the EU28, according to first estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In November 2016, production in construction grew by 0.9 percent in the euro area and by 0.7 in the EU28.
In December 2016 compared with December 2015, production in construction rose by 3.2 percent in the euro area and by 1.6 percent in the EU28.
Average production in the construction for the year 2016, compared with 2015, increased by 1.6 percent in the euro area and by 1.3 percent in the EU28.
The decrease of 0.2 percent in production in construction in the euro area in December 2016, compared with November 2016, is due to building construction falling by 0.5 percent, while civil engineering rose by 0.8 percent.
In the EU28, the increase of 0.6 percent is due to civil engineering rising by 1.2 percent and building construction by 0.2 percent.
Among member states for which data are available, the largest decreases in production in construction were recorded in Romania (-4.3 percent), Slovakia (-3.1 percent) and Bulgaria (-2.1 percent), and the highest increases in Sweden (+4.7 percent), Poland (+2.5 percent), the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom (both +2.2 percent).
The increase of 3.2 percent in production in construction in the euro area in December 2016, compared with December 2015, is due to civil engineering rising by 6.5 percent and building construction by 2.5 percent.
In the EU28, the increase of 1.6 percent is due to building construction rising by 2.3 percent, while civil engineering fell by 0.5 percent.
Among member states for which data are available, the highest increases in production in construction were recorded in Sweden (+11.2 percent), the Netherlands (+10.4 percent) and Slovenia (+9.1 percent), and the largest decreases in Romania (-26.7 percent), Slovakia (-18.5 percent) and Hungary (-14.9 percent).
