Compared with July, August seasonally adjusted production in the construction sector was down 0.9 percent in the euro area (EA19) and 1.3 percent in the EU28, according to first estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In July 2016, production in construction rose by 1.5 percent in the euro area and by 0.3 in the EU28.
In August 2016 compared with August 2015, production in construction rose by 0.9 percent in the euro area, while it fell by 0.5 percent in the EU28.
The decrease of 0.9 percent in production in construction in the euro area in August 2016, compared with July 2016, is due to building construction falling by 1 percent and civil engineering by 0.7 percent.
In the EU28, the decrease of 1.3 percent is due to civil engineering falling by 1.5 percent and building construction by 1.2 percent.
Among Member States for which data are available, the largest decreases in production in construction were recorded in Poland (-5.5 percent), Sweden (-5.4 percent) and Spain (-3 percent), and the highest increases in Slovakia (+6.7 percent), Hungary (+4.6 percent) and Italy (+3.4 percent)
The increase of 0.9 percent in production in construction in the euro area in August 2016, compared with August 2015, is due to civil engineering rising by 1.5 percent and building construction by 0.4 percent.
In the EU28, the decrease of 0.5 percent is due to civil engineering falling by 4.5 percent, while building construction grew by 0.4 percent.
Among Member States for which data are available, increases in production in construction were recorded in the Netherlands (+13.6 percent), Sweden (+12 percent), Italy (+4.2 percent) and France (+2 percent), while the largest decreases were observed in Poland (-21.8 percent), Slovenia (-14.5 percent) and Bulgaria (-10.2 percent).
