Motion Industries, Birmingham, AL, No. 4 on MDM’s 2016 list of the top 40 industrial distributors, reported first-quarter sales of $1.2 billion, up 6.9 percent compared to the previous year. Operating profit increased 10.4 percent to $90.3 million.

Parent company Genuine Parts Co. (NYSE: GPC), Atlanta, GA, reported first-quarter sales of $3.9 billion, an increase of 5 percent compared to the previous year. Profit increased 1.3 percent to $160.1 million.

Sales at EIS, the electrical/electronic group, for the first quarter increased 4.9 percent to $184.4 million compared to the previous year. Profit decreased 8.1 percent.

Sales for S. P. Richards, the office products group, increased 8.9 percent to $519 million for the first quarter. Profit decreased 9 percent.

Automotive sales increased 13.4 percent to $2 billion for the first quarter. Profit decreased 1.2 percent.
