Fastenal Co., Winona, MN, (Nasdaq: FAST) reported sales for the first quarter of $1 billion, up 6.2 percent from the first quarter a year ago. Profit was $134.2 million, up 6.3 percent from the same period in 2015.
Daily sales increased 6.2 percent for the quarter to $16.4 million.
The number of stores open in the first quarter was down 5.6 percent year-over-year to 2,480. FAST Solutions machines were up 13.3 percent to 64,430 vending machines. Employee count was down 3.3 percent year-over-year to 19,822.
The company also reported sales for March of $386.9 million, an 8.4 percent increase over the same period a year ago. Daily sales were up 8.4 percent to $16.8 million.
During the month, sales to manufacturing customers increased 8.2 percent, while sales to nonresidential construction customers increased 6.1 percent.
Store count was 2,480, compared to 2,626 a year ago. Employee headcount decreased 1.7 percent year-over-year to 19,822.
