Essendant Inc. (NASDAQ: ESND), Deerfield, IL, reported sales for the third quarter of $1.4 billion, down 2 percent over the same period a year ago. Profit decreased 31.2 percent to $27.7 million.

Third-quarter sales for industrial supplies increased 37.3 percent to $223.5 million, including $81.2 million of incremental sales from the MEDCO and Nestor acquisitions made in October of 2014 and August of 2015, respectively.

Sales for janitorial and breakroom supplies decreased 1.8 percent to $375.5 million. Total office products sales declined 9.5 percent to $752 million.

For the first nine months, sales were $4 billion, up 1.8 percent from the same period in 2014. Profit decreased 42.8 percent to $51.5 million.
