Metal manufacturer Alcoa (NYSE:AA), Pittsburgh, PA, reported sales for the third quarter of $6.2 billion, up 8 percent from the same period a year ago. Profit was $149 million, compared to $24 million a year ago.
The company said nearly half of the year-over-year revenue improvement resulted from organic growth. Favorable metal pricing and higher energy sales also contributed to revenues for the quarter.
Excluding the impact of special items, profit was $370 million, triple its adjusted 3Q 2013 profit of $120 million.
For the first nine months, sales were $17.5 billion, up slightly from $17.4 billion year over year. The company recorded a net income for the period of $109 million, compared to profit of $54 million a year ago.
