Industrial distributors Grainger and Wesco International are among the 500 companies selected by Newsweek as “America’s Most Responsible Companies” for 2023.
Newsweek said it partnered with global research and data firm Statista for the list, which ranks each company via scores for environmental concerns, social concerns and corporate government concerns.
“In recent years, and especially with the rise in popularity of ‘ESG’ (environment, social and corporate governance) focused investing, ‘corporate responsibility’ has become a phrase many companies are happy to use in their advertising,” Newsweek Global Editor in Chief Nancy Cooper wrote when the list was announced Dec. 13. “There is no set definition but generally it is used as shorthand for ‘Our company is not a soulless machine designed to do absolutely anything–no matter how destructive, reckless or dishonest — in pursuit of a buck.’ In any given case, it can be hard to tell whether such a statement means a corporation really tries to treat its customers, employees and planet decently or is just public relations blather. Talking the talk is easy, but walking the walk is hard.”
Grainger is ranked No. 122 on the list, while Wesco came in at No. 438. Computer hardware company HP topped the list.
Other industrial-focused companies that made the list include: Lowe’s Companies (63); Kimberly-Clark (65); Sherwin-Williams (92); Regal Rexnord (128); Emerson Electric (143); Ingersoll Rand (149); The Home Depot (152); Kennametal (176); Stanley Black & Decker (177); Fluor Corporation (189); Timken (258); AMETEK (278); Caterpillar (295); Masonite International (334); MSA Safety (357); and Littelfuse (424).
