In the past 18 months, credit card data breaches have made big headlines. Many people – myself included – were impacted by hackers accessing the information at some of the biggest retailers in the U.S., including Target and Home Depot.
The headlines may give some businesses pause when they consider expanding their sales options to include online sales, but with customers demanding greater access to more convenient sales channels, that may not be the best business decision. The key, according to Diane Merrigan, director of the B2B division for EVO Platinum Services, is to make sure you have a security strategy that includes cybersecurity in the discussion.
"2015 is expected to be the year of the breach," Merrigan says in the latest episode of MDM Executive Briefing, available now. The good news is that internal security and cybersecurity go hand in hand, she says.
When considering how to protect your internal data from internal breaches, you can apply many of the same elements to cybersecurity. But you have to start addressing it now, Merrigan says. "Security needs to be a part of your budget discussions."
