Amazon will return to its pre-pandemic policy, requiring corporate employees to be in the office five days a week.

In a statement on Monday to employees, CEO Andy Jassy shared that the company’s leadership has been reflecting on how to improve its ability to “invent, collaborate, and connect” to achieve the best outcomes for both its customers and the business.

Executive leadership decided that returning to the office five days a week would facilitate better communication among employees. Jassy said that the company has noticed it’s easier to “learn, model, practice, and strengthen” Amazon’s culture and brainstorm effectively when employees are together.

Additionally, the benefits of being in the office three days a week for the past 15 months strengthened leadership’s belief in the value of full in-office presence, said Jassy.

Prior to the pandemic, corporate employees were expected to be in the office full-time except in extenuating circumstances — to finish coding in an isolated environment, to see customers or partners, house emergency or sick family member. Otherwise, approval was required through a team leader for Remote Work Exception. Employees are expected to abide by this remote structure following the implementation of the full workweek.

Amazon will introduce the full workweek in January 2025 to ensure employees have time to adjust to the new schedule. The company is collaborating with Global Real Estate and Facilities (GREF) to arrange desk setups for employees.
