Amazon is planning to open a massive robot-focused warehouse in Melbourne, Australia, according to business media reports.

The 2.25-million-square-foot warehouse, scheduled to open in 2025, would be the country’s second robotics fulfillment center. The facility is expected to store up to 25 million small items while being serviced by Amazon Robotics technology.

Amazon first entered the Australian market in 2017. News reports have cited a statement from Amazon Australia saying the warehouse will create 2,000 jobs alongside the robots.

About 2,000 more jobs would be created during construction and fit-out phases, Bloomberg reported.

Citing a statement from Amazon, Business News Australia reported the company said the robots “will work collaboratively with employees by moving pods of inventory to them, reducing the time and effort that would otherwise be required for the employee to stow items for sale or pick them for new customer orders.”

Amazon also is reportedly testing a generative artificial intelligence tool for online sellers that writes product descriptions, according to industry reports.

The company recently reported its 2023 second-quarter earnings, which showed net sales increased 11% to $134.4 billion in the second quarter, compared with $121.2 billion in 2Q 2022. Operating income also increased to $7.7 billion in the second quarter, compared with $3.3 billion in 2Q 2023. Net income was $6.7 billion in 2Q, or $0.65 per diluted share, compared with a net loss of $2.0 billion, or $0.20 per diluted share, in 2Q 2022.

The company does not disclose specific earnings figures for its Amazon Business segment.
