European Construction Production Increases in June

Construction production rose 0.7 percent in the euro area and 0.8 percent in the EU27.

In the construction sector, seasonally adjusted production rose by 0.7 percent in the euro area (EA17) and by 0.8 percent in the EU27 in June 2013, compared with the previous month, according to Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In May 2013, production rose by 0.5 percent and 0.3 percent respectively.

Compared with June 2012, production decreased by 3 percent in the euro area and by 1.5 percent in the EU27 in June 2013.

Among the member states for which data are available for June 2013, production in construction rose in four, fell in six and remained stable in Spain, France and Hungary. The increases were registered in Slovenia (+10.5 percent), Poland (+5.3 percent), Germany (+1.6 percent) and the Czech Republic (+1.3 percent), and the largest decreases in Romania (-2.4 percent), Portugal (-2.2 percent) and Sweden (-0.9 percent).

Building construction grew by 0.3 percent in the euro area and by 0.5 percent in the EU27, after +0.2 percent and 0.0 percent respectively in May 2013. Civil engineering rose by 1.3 percent in the euro area and by 1.5 percent in the EU27, after +0.6 percent and +0.7 percent respectively in the previous month.

Annual Comparison
Among the member states for which data are available for June 2013, production in construction fell in 10 and rose in three. The largest decreases were registered in Poland (-16.3 percent), Portugal (-12 percent), Slovakia (-10.7 percent) and the Czech Republic (-9.8 percent), and the increases in Hungary (+12.5 percent), Spain (+4.1 percent) and Sweden (+3.1 percent).

Building construction decreased by 3.1 percent in the euro area and by 1.2 percent in the EU27, after -3.7 percent and -3.6 percent respectively in May 2013. Civil engineering fell by 3.0 percent in the euro area and by 2.5 percent in the EU27, after -4.9 percent and -6.7 percent respectively in the previous month.
