Compared with December 2014, January seasonally adjusted production in the construction sector grew by 1.9 percent in the euro area (EA19) and by 1 percent in the EU28, according to Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.
Compared with January 2014, production in construction grew by 3 percent in the euro area and by 1.4 percent in the EU28.
Compared with December, January's increase of 1.9 percent in production in construction in the euro area is due to building construction rising by 2.3 percent and civil engineering by 0.2 percent. In the EU28, the increase of 1 percent is due to building construction rising by 1.3 percent, while civil engineering fell by 0.7 percent.
Among member states for which data are available, the highest increases in production in construction were observed in Slovenia (+11.2 percent), the Czech Republic (+8.7 percent), Hungary (+6.6 percent) and Germany (+5 percent), and the largest decreases in Romania (-5.3 percent), the United Kingdom (-2.8 percent) and Bulgaria (-1.7 percent).
The year-over-year increase of 3 percent in production in construction in the euro area in January 2015 was driven building construction and civil engineering both rising by 3 percent. In the EU28, the increase of 1.4 percent is due to building construction rising by 1.6 percent and civil engineering by 0.4 percent.
Among member states for which data are available, the highest increases in production in construction were registered in Spain (+14.4 percent), Romania (+12.8 percent), Sweden (+11.3 percent), the Czech Republic (+8.3 percent) and Hungary (+8.1 percent) and the largest decreases in Bulgaria (-4.2 percent), the United Kingdom (-3.3 percent) and Italy (-2.4 percent).
