Border States Electric Agrees to Buy Harris Electric Supply Co.

Border States Electric, Fargo, ND, has agreed to buy Harris Electric Supply Company with locations in Clarksville, Columbia, Cookeville, Hendersonville, Lebanon, Murfreesboro, and Nashville, TN.

Harris Electric provides electrical distribution, power monitoring and power quality, lighting, data communication, control and automation solutions to the residential, industrial/original equipment manufacturer (OEM), commercial construction, data communications, and utility markets. The transaction is expected to close in November.

Harris Electric Supply Company employs 120 and serves more than 1,900 customers. The Harris Electric Supply Company name will not change but will include A Division of Border States.”

Canadian Economic Output Slumps in February

Canadian economic output slumped again in February, after recovering in January from a steep decline in December. Several factors have contributed to the recent weakness in real gross domestic product (GDP).

The new Family Day holiday in Ontario shortened work hours in February for many firms. Weather also has been erratic, with record snow this winter in much of Eastern Canada and the coldest weather in years in Western Canada. Meanwhile, the US economy remained sluggish in the first quarter, as the worsening state of its housing market offset higher exports.

Transport/Logistics Deal Volume Falls in 1Q

Both deal volume and value in the transportation and logistics industry declined during the first quarter of 2008, according to the PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP Q1 2008 edition of Intersections: Global Transportation &Logistics Mergers and Acquisitions Analysis. Global Deal activity is not on track to match the levels seen in 2007; however, the 45 deals (worth at least $50 million each) announced in the first quarter are on track to exceed 2006 levels.

The credit markets and slowing deal activity in the U.S. significantly affected deal volume in the first quarter of the year. When excluding deals in which a U.S. entity was the acquirer or target, the number of deals (38 deals) is on pace to exceed both 2006 and 2007 levels (119 and 142 deals respectively), indicating that a …

Border States Grows in Minnesota

Electrical distributor Border States, Fargo, ND, will open a branch in Rochester, MN, in April 2008. The new branch will operate out of a 15,000-square-foot facility and initially employ nine employees. The Rochester branch will serve the construction, industrial, utility, and data communications markets, and will be an authorized Square D distributor.

Canadian Manufacturing Sales Drop 3.4% in December

Canadian manufacturing sales dropped 3.4% to $48.6 billion in December, the lowest level in three years. Longer-than-normal shutdowns at several motor vehicle plants were the primary source of the deep cut in sales.

Excluding the motor vehicle and parts industries, total manufacturing sales decreased a more moderate 0.8% in December.

December’s decline was the largest since August 2003, when a widespread electrical blackout and its fallout thereafter impacted much of Ontario’s production during that month.

A record $2.7 trillion in first half 2007 worldwide mergers has led dealmakers to call the current M & A environment good or excellent (93%), according to a new survey by Association for Corporate Growth (ACG) and Thomson Financial.&nbsp ;

Border States, Fargo, ND, has agreed to buy Minnesota Electric Supply Company, a full line provider of electrical products with eight locations in Minnesota and more than 3,000 customers.
