Order intake volume at Swedish manufacturer Sandvik gradually declined in April and May to a level 40% to 50% lower than last year, due primarily to low demand across customer segments. As a result, the company has had to take extensive actions to offset the impact, including reducing staff by 6,000 since October.
In addition to the staff reductions, work hours will be reduced by 15% to 20% for about 12,000 to 14,000 workers beginning in June, and 10 production sites will be permanently closed.

Responding to weak global demand, Swedish manufacturer Sandvik Group announced efforts to reduce overcapacity and increase productivity at many of its facilities. The measures include lay-offs, termination of temporary contracts, and the closure of a production unit in Perth, Australia.
The global market trend is currently very weak. The decline described in conjunction with the report for the third quarter has deteriorated significantly in several segments, primarily relating to the automotive and engineering industries. Swedish manufacturer Sandvik Group’s Tooling unit has agreed to buy 49% of Precorp Inc., Spanish Fork, UT.
Precorp is a developer, producer and supplier of polycrystalline diamond (PCD) and cemented-carbide tools for machining of advanced composite materials as well as many other materials used by the aerospace and automotive industries. In 2007, Precorp had sales of SEK 140M (US$23 million), with 140 employees.

Sandvik has sold its diamond tools unit to Husqvarna. The acquired operation comprises production and sales of diamond tools and related machines for sawing, drilling and grinding.
Annual sales are SEK 65 million. The operation is based in Nora, Sweden and Vantaa, Finland.
The acquisition complements Husqvarna’s product range for the construction industry and reinforces the group’s position in the Nordic region.

Corstor is a manufacturer of borehole core storage and handling systems for the mining and exploration industries. Corstor also distributes analysis and survey equipment as well as accessories to the mining and exploration industries in Africa.
