U.S. monthly manufactured durable goods decreased $6.3 billion or 2.2% in December from November, according to an advance report from the U.S Census Bureau.
Released Jan. 28, the report showed that December orders decreased to $276.1 billion. This followed a 2.0% decrease in November.
Year-over-year, total durable goods decreased 2.2%.
The December decrease was driven by transportation equipment — down four of the last five months — which was down 7.4% vs. November. Excluding transportation, new orders increased 0.3% compared to November. Excluding defense, new orders fell 2.4%.
Capital goods decreased 7.1% month-to-month.
Shipments of manufactured durable goods — up following four consecutives monthly decreases — increased 0.9% to $287.4 billion month-to-month. This followed a November decrease of 0.2%.

December’s unfilled orders for durable goods in December — down following five consecutive monthly increases — decreased 0.5% to $1.3 billion month-to-month. This followed a November decrease of 0.2%.
December’s inventories for durable goods — up two consecutive months — increased 0.4% to $533 billion month-to-month. This followed a November 0.5% increase.
