Cooper Industries, Ltd., Houston, TX, reported fourth quarter 2008 sales of $1.52 billion, down 1% from fourth quarter 2007. Profit decreased 38% to $111.1 million.
 
"As the quarter progressed, the credit crisis deepened with the economic deterioration in the U.S. and Europe spreading around the world. Cooper earlier announced its intention to reduce our work force by over 1,000 employees and to take a fourth quarter charge estimated to be in the range of $20 million to $22 million. As economic conditions deteriorated, we determined it was necessary to increase the reduction in work force to in excess of 2,200 employees globally and recorded a restructuring charge of $35.7 million," said Cooper Industries’ CEO Kirk S. Hachigian.

Milwaukee, WI-based Brady Corporation reported sales were up 9% to $396.8 for its fiscal 2008 fourth quarter compared with the same quarter a year ago. Profit increased 33% to $34.8 million.
 
For the fiscal year ended July 31, 2008, sales rose 12% to $1.5 billion, compared to sales of $1.4 billion in fiscal 2008. Profit for fiscal year 2008 improved 21% to $132.2 million.

The increase in fourth quarter sales was comprised of acquisition growth adding 3 percent and foreign currency translation contributing 6 percent to sales growth. Organic growth was flat. Regionally, sales were up 16 percent in Europe and 20 percent in Asia/Pacific; sales in the Americas region were flat.

Sperian Protection has agreed to buy Combisafe International AB, Northampton, UK, a developer and supplier of height safety and access systems.
 
Combisafe expands Sperian’s current fall protection system portfolio. It also reinforces Sperian’s presence into the fast growing Middle-East market with their operations in Dubai and further expands Sperian’s presence in the Northern European Market.
 
Combisafe is majority controlled by Fairford (Sweden).
