Distributors and their suppliers want to improve efficiencies, save time and money, and reduce errors. One way to do this is to improve and standardize the way they use and send data. This article is the first of a series of MDM articles on current trends in doing business electronically.
About five years ago, PTDA member Baldwin Supply Co., Minneapolis, MN-based distributor of mechanical power transmission and electrical control products, adopted the association’s recommended format for receiving product data changes from its suppliers.
“It used to take us a month to update a price increase with some of our bigger manufacturers. Now we can do it in an hour or so,” says Baldwin Supply President Ron Herem, the Power Transmission Distributors Association board liaison to the Industry Relations Committee, which in collaboration with other associations developed the Product and Price Information Format.
“(PPIF) drastically reduced the time it took to do a pricing update. We used to have 2 and a half people – and that was pretty much all they did, and it was done manually.”
Baldwin’s experience is just one example of the impact of one of many data standardization initiatives taking place right now in distribution.

Grocery wholesalers SuperValu Inc. and C&S Wholesale Grocers face a class action lawsuit alleging the two companies "conspired to allocate markets, customers and territories" in New England and the Midwest for the purpose of "fixing, raising, andmaintaining prices." DeLuca’s Corp., a Boston grocer, filed the complaint on June 19.
The complaint contends that in 2003 SuperValu agreed to exit the New England market in exchange for C&S’s agreement to refrain from competing in the Midwest. As a result, prices in both regions that had benefitted from competition between the two entities have been inflated and supply reduced.
SuperValu is the dominant wholesaler in the Midwest, with 2007 sales of more than $9 billion. C&S reported sales of more than $19 billion in 2007, and is the …
A recent article from Fortune Magazine looks at how foodservice distributor Sysco uses technology to manage its shipments internally and externally – schools, stadiums, assisted-living facilities, and more – if the venue serves food, chances are Sysco supplies it.
The distributor ships 21.5 million tons of produce, meats, prepared meals and other food-related products each year, per the article. It uses software, databases, scanning systems and robotics to do it efficiently.
As the article says:
"Sysco’s supply-chain logistics are especially complex because a single jar of caviar can’t be handled the same way as a box of frozen onion rings or an 80-pound tub of flour. That rules out most off-the-shelf inventory-management software. …
