Canadian Manufacturing Sales Decline in May

Canadian manufacturing sales fell 6.0% to $38.4 billion in May, the lowest level since November 1998. Manufacturing sales leveled off between February and April, after falling by 18.7% between October 2008 and January 2009. Plant shutdowns in the motor vehicle and primary metal industries, along with continued volatility in the aerospace industry, accounted for most of the decline in May.

Constant dollar manufacturing sales fell 5.8% in May, indicating that lower volumes rather than price changes were behind the decrease in sales. Sales in 17 of 21 manufacturing industries decreased in May, accounting for about three-quarters of total sales.

The transportation equipment industry led the declines, falling 25.7% compared with April. Excluding the transportation equipment …

Open Environment Focused on Learning, Opportunity May Lure Young Talent

Salary and benefits are often the first things that come to mind when someone is asked what they look for in a job. But other factors often play as big, if not a bigger, role for some of the younger workers entering the work force. Work environment is one of them.

In a (non-scientific) survey conducted by Modern Distribution Management for a recent article on demographic shifts in distribution, students in industrial distribution programs at two universities were asked: In looking at potential employers, which attributes are most important to you?

Work environment was not one of the top answers – likely because it wasn’t one of the prefilled choices. However, more than half of the people who selected "Other" filled it …

More Signs We Are Nearing Recession’s End

More signs are appearing that an end to the recession is on its way. Several indicators are inching their way upward, according to the latest Small Business Economic Trends report, released by the National Federation of Independent Business. However, the report also warns that there are bound to be bumps along the road to recovery as the economy reorganizes itself.

The report indicates the labor market is finding a foothold, even if a bit slippery," with forecasts pointing to unemployment declining to 8.8% in the next three months.

Additionally, the credit freeze predicted earlier this year never materialized, and June data indicate the credit market actually may be easing. Obtaining credit is more difficult for small businesses than it was in 2003, but credit patterns are no …

Report: Weak Growth Possible For Advanced Economies in 2010

The worldwide plunge in manufacturing output seems to have reached a temporary bottom, even in countries such as Japan where the industrial downturn was especially severe. Nonetheless, the immediate outlook for a resumption of world economic growth remains tentative and in flux, according to the MAPI Quarterly Forecast of U.S. Exports, Global Growth, and the Dollar: Third Quarter 2009 Through Fourth Quarter 2010.

Weak growth, at best, is in store for the advanced economies during 2010, according to MAPI economist Cliff Waldman. The short-term prospects are mixed for key emerging market economies, depending upon the degree of openness, export diversification, and ties to the United States. The report says that U.S. export demand will contract at an historic pace before …

A Demographic Shift in Distribution

As baby boomers speed toward retirement, managers are preparing for the next generation of workers eager to move up the ladder. They follow in the footsteps of retirees who have worked in distribution for decades – if not their whole careers. MDM spoke with and surveyed juniors and seniors at three universities about what they are looking for as they start their careers in distribution.

Times have certainly changed, and much has been made of the differences between the baby boomers and generations X and Y. While it is true that younger generations may value different attributes and incentives in the workplace, many younger workers also recognize they have a lot to learn from long-time distribution veterans …

Miller recently spoke with MDM Associate Editor Jenel Stelton-Holtmeier about the Women in Industry conference – established during her tenure at NAED, preparing young people for a career in distribution, and the changing role of technology in the industry.

Grainger’s Plans: Grow DC Network, Expand Product Lines, Make Acquisitions

Even as some companies are pulling back in response to current economic conditions, Grainger has taken a different tack: aggressively pursue market share. At the William Blair & Company Growth Stock Conferencein June, Grainger CEO Jim Ryan laid out Grainger’s plan to gain market share in the highly fragmented MRO market.

Focus on service is essential to gaining and keeping market share, Ryan says. For Grainger, this includes expanding its network of distribution centers in North America, adding square feet in existing and new branches, and investing in its IT network.

"Our IT network and phone systems are integrated across the network, meaning we can respond more efficiently to customer needs," Ryan says. For example, during the H1N1 flu outbreak in Mexico, Grainger was able to …

Commentary: Focus on the Now, But With a Strategic Plan as Your Guide

Michael Jackson's death has spurred nonstop coverage from CNN, the tabloids, and everything in between. The King of Pop is all over the Web. And it's rare to turn on a TV news program without Jackson at its center.

Since the launch of CNN and 24-hour news, we have been able to get our news whenever we want it. As the World Wide Web has grown, we've been able to get updates almost literally by the second – as we did earlier this week during the Los Angeles-based Jackson memorial service.

It really is incredible how we can garner information about an event halfway across the country close to real-time; it was not that long ago when we would have had to wait for the full report and pictures of the memorial service until the next morning's paper was delivered.

These days, we are …

Crystal Ball Still Foggy On the Economy

Though ambiguity still rules the economic future, a consensus is forming that recovery will be a long, slow process. Experts from academia to governments are doing their best to clear the fog in their crystal balls but few hard and fast answers can be found.

That said, there are some interesting insights appearing. In a recent interview with Knowledge@Wharton, Jeremy Siegel, a finance professor at Wharton, noted that demand in several sectors is starting to show signs of increasing.

But don’t expect a huge jump in the near future, Siegel advises. Industries like housing and automotive have been battered. So even though we’ve likely hit the bottom – Siegel expects May, June or July to be declared the official bottom – we still have a long way to climb before we can say things are …
