ERIKS Group Expands in Germany

The ERIKS group has acquired Schmitztechnik GmbH in Mönchengladbach, Germany.
 
Schmitztechnik GmbH sells and customizes plastics and rubber components. The company had sales of €5.5 million. Schmitztechnik GmbH serves original equipment manufacturers (OEM) as well as the industrial maintenance market (MRO) in food, pharmaceutical, special mechanical engineering and energy.
 
The acquisition is in line with ERIKS’ strategy to expand its activities with new products and to enter new markets.

Rexel Changes Leadership in U.S.

Rexel, global distributor of electrical supplies, has made Chris Hartmann the CEO of IESC, the holding company of Rexel’s U.S. activities, effective Jan. 21.
 
He takes over from Dick Waterman, who is retiring but will stay on as an advisor to Rexel and will serve as chairman of the National Association of Electrical Distributors.
 
Hartmann will oversee the coordination between Gexpro and Rexel Inc, the Group’s two commercial banners in the U.S.
 
Since 2006, Chris Hartmann has served as executive vice president and Chief Operating Office of Thomas &Betts, a manufacturer of electrical products, and president of the manufacturer’s electrical division from 2003-2006.

Wholesale Prices Up 6.3% in 2007

In 2007, wholesale prices moved up 6.3 percent, compared with a 1.1 percent advance in 2006, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. The faster rate was attributable to food and energy prices. The index for finiahed energy goods surged 18.4% in 2007, after falling 2 percent a year earlier. Prices for consumer foods jumped 7.4 percent following a 1.7 percent rise in 2006.
 
Core inflation advanced 2 percent in 2007, the same as in the preceding year.
 
At the earlier stages of processing, prices received by manufacturers of intermediate goods climbed 6.8 percent in 2007 after moving up 2.8 percent in the prior year, while the crude goods index jumped 20.6 percent following a 4.7-percent decrease in 2006.

Thomas & Betts to Divest Plastic Pipes Business

Thomas &Betts Corp., Memphis, TN, has decided to sell the plastic pipe business acquired with the company’s recent purchase of Lamson &Sessions Co.
 
The company will sell the business, which includes polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) conduit, duct and pressure pipe used in construction, industrial, municipal, utility and telecommunications markets sold under the Ameriduct, Pyramid, Lamson Vylon and other brand names. The products generated $230 million in sales for the 12-month period ended Sept. 30, 2007. The operations are headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio.

EWS Tool Technologies Buys Command Tooling Systems

German-based driven and static tools manufacturer EWS Tool Technologies has acquired tool manufacturer Command Tooling Systems LLC, Minneapolis, MN.
 
Command has 75 employees. Command is a producer of tool holders for milling machine systems and serves the automotive industry, air and space technologies and manufacturing of medical components. Command will continue to offer its current product lines, including standard and custom toolholders, specialty toolholders, and its full line of ThermoLock Shrink-fit products and the URMA modular boring systems and reamers.

WinWholesale Opens Tampa Winnelson

WinWholesale, Dayton, OH, has opened Tampa Winnelson Company to provide plumbing and mechanical contractors in the Tampa Bay area.

It is the first WinWholesale company in the Tampa Bay area and serves Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas and Polk counties.

Schneider Electric has agreed to acquire IMS, a U.S. company that designs and manufactures integrated motor and drive products with revenues around $20 million in 2007.
With this acquisition, Schneider Electric strengthens its presence in general motion control through the fast-growing integrated motor and drive market.

With this acquisition, we will expand our product offering for OEM customers in the U.S. while providing increased technical support in motion applications,” said Michel Crochon, executive vice president of the Automation Business Unit at Schneider.

Valley National Gases, LLC, Washington, PA, has acquired Wolfenden Industries, a distributor of industrial, medical and special gases with three operating locations in Northeast Ohio.
 
Wolfenden has sales of $43 million.

MSC Industrial Direct Co. Inc., Melville, NY, distributor of MRO supplies to industrial customers, reported sales in the first quarter 2008 were $437.6 million, an increase of 8.8% from the prior-year period. Profit was up 16.3% to $46.9 million.

Industrial cleaning product supplier Zep Inc., Atlanta, GA, reported sales in the first quarter ended Nov. 30, 2007, were $143.6 million, up 4.9%. Profit was $6.3 million.
 
During the current year’s first quarter, the cost of commodities utilized in manufacturing continued to increase, and Zep management anticipates higher commodity costs in coming quarters.

Avnet, Inc. has agreed to buy UK-based distributor Azzurri Technology Ltd. Azzurri is a distributor of high technology semiconductors and embedded systems products in Europe.
 
Upon closing, Azzurri will be integrated into Avnet Electronics Marketing EMEA primarily within the Avnet Memec specialist division.

Monthly Wholesale Trade Sales & Inventories: October 2007

October 2007 sales of wholesalers, except manufacturers’sales branches and offices, were $369.8 billion, up 0.7 percent from the revised September level and were up 11.5 percent from the October 2006 level. The September estimate was revised upward $0.4 billion. October sales of durable goods were up 0.6 percent from last month and were up 5.3 percent from a year ago.

Compared to last month, sales of computer and computer peripheral equipment and software were up 4.3 percent and sales of metals and minerals, except petroleum, were up 3.8 percent. Sales of nondurable goods were up 0.7 percent from last month and were up 17.7 percent from last year. Sales of drugs and druggists’sundries were up 4.0 percent from last month, and sales of chemicals and allied products were up 2.9 …

Investment firm Berkshire Hathaway, Omaha, NE, will buy 60 percent of Marmon Holdings Inc., a private holding company with more than 125 manufacturing and service businesses that operate independently, for $4.5 billion. The sectors covered include: wire and cable, transportation services and engineered products (including rail), highway technologies, distribution of pipe and tubing, flow products, industrial products (including fasteners, safety products and metal fabrication), construction services, water treatment equipment, and retail services. Companies have collective revenues of $7 billion. Marmon was formed in 1953 when it was acquired as a small ailing manufacturer in Ohio by Jay and Robert Pritzker.
