Report: Canadian Economy Shows Good Signs in February

According to a recent report by Statistics Canada (www.statcan.ca), there are several indications that the Canadian economy quickly shrugged off its drop in December and began growing again in the New Year. Housing starts and auto sales posted strong gains. The stock market in February rebounded from its dip in January, reflecting one of the largest jumps in monthly commodity prices during the current boom that began six years ago. Most importantly, firms expanded payrolls in both January and February, consistent with a pickup in investment plans for 2008.

Firms plan to boost nominal business investment about 6% in 2008, according to the annual survey of investment intentions. The increase bettered last year’s hike, and was …

CONEXPO, IFPE Show Outsized Even for Vegas

You wouldn’t know the troubles in U.S. residential construction markets if you were at the CONEXPO-CON/AGG and IFPE expositions last week in Las Vegas. From what I heard and saw, people were buying and shopping hard. The two biggest impressions I came away with were the quantity of international exhibitors and attendees, and the increased focus of energy-efficient and hybrid technology, both on the construction side as well as hydraulic and motion control products.

Without question, the vitality of the show indicates there are some growth markets even while the national focus is on the housing markets. Manufacturers and distributors at the show said their industrial sales were strong. Those selling into energy-related sectors and any markets with export were reporting …

Wolseley Sales Hit by U.S. Housing Slump

Wolseley revenues for the six months ended Jan. 31, 2008, increased 2% to £8.02 billion (US$16 billion at current exchange rates) Profit fell 23.1% for the period primarily due to losses at Stock Building Supply in the U.S.

Where Stock is concerned, the market has deteriorated considerably. It’s beyond anything that we’ve experienced, in my view, since World War II. If you look at housing starts, they’ve dropped from 2.2 million to under 1 million. We’re in a situation where we’ve made significant headcount and cost reductions,”said Chip Hornsby, Wolseley CEO.

“Now we’ve got to be able to begin to anticipate what’s going to happen next, particularly where that organization is concerned. So we’ve gone in and begun to look at it more from a strategic standpoint …

International Wire Sales Fall in 4Q

International Wire Group, Inc., Camden, NY, reported sales for the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, 2007, were down 3.9% to $176.7 million. Profit was $2.5 million for the three months, up $1.6 million.

Commentary: Not Every Market Showing Signs of a Slowdown

A funny thing happened on the way to a recession. Data keeps getting in the way, at least in certain markets that the mass media don’t pay a lot of attention to. Case in point: January trend data by the Power Transmission Distributors Association shows an uptick in sales for the month in the U.S. and Canada.

So while broad-based needles continue to point down, it’s important to keep the market niches, customer segments and top ten customers that define the long-term health of your business front and center in your perspective.

The MDM Survey on the Economy in this issue offers a few interesting indicators within wholesale distribution. Nearly a quarter of those who responded are planning an acquisition in the next six months. More than a third expect to have …
