3M Canada Buys Medical Product Developer

3M Canada, a wholly-owned subsidiary of St. Paul, MN-based 3M, has acquired Les Entreprises Solumed Inc., a Quebec-based developer and marketer of medical products designed to prevent infections in operating rooms and hospitals.
 
Solumed brings a chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) and alcohol-based line of products to 3M’s offering for infection prevention. The addition of Solumed positions 3M for growth in the fast-growing segment of intravenous (IV) site care and in preoperative care and hand hygiene, where CHG-based products are gaining momentum,”said Chuck Kummeth, vice president and general manager, 3M Medical Division.

Tennant Company Buys Alfa

Tennant Company, Minneapolis, MN, has completed its acquisition of Sociedade Alfa Ltda., maker of the Alfa brand commercial cleaning machines.
 
Sociedade Alfa Ltda., Sao Paulo, Brazil, with 2007 revenues of roughly $9 million, manufactures and sells commercial cleaning equipment that includes commercial ride-on scrubbers, ride-on sweepers and walk-behind scrubbers.
 
This is the second acquisition announced by Tennant Company in 2008. The company recently announced its acquisition of Applied Sweepers, maker of Green Machines® brand outdoor cleaning equipment, based in Falkirk, Scotland.

Rexel CEO: Hagemeyer Deal Makes Rexel Stronger

Now that Rexel has completed its purchase of Dutch electrical distributor Hagemeyer NV, the next step in the deal -to sell Hagemeyer’s North American, Asian-Pacific and some European assets to competitor Sonepar -will take place in the next six months, Rexel CEO Jean-Charles Pauze said.

ERIKS Makes Counteroffer for Econosto

ERIKS group nv has made an offer for valve manufacturer Royal Econosto N.V. for €7.80 in cash per share, or €126 million (about US$200 million with current exchange rates). The bid counters an offer from buyout firm Gilde Buy Out Partners BV of €7.25 a share.
 
According to a Bloomberg report, Gilde has five days to make a counteroffer.
 
Econosto has two divisions: flow and sealing technology (the production, sale and distribution of valves, gaskets, sealing products, hoses, couplings, instrumentation systems, chemical seals, etc.); and Comfort and Environmental Technology (production and sale of domestic and industrial HVAC and energy systems and services.)

Ryan Will Be CEO of Grainger as of June 1

James T. Ryan, Grainger’s president, will add the title of CEO effective June 1, 2008. He will succeed Richard L. Keyser, who will remain with the Chicago, IL-based facilities maintenance distributor as chairman of the board.
 
Ryan was named Chief Operating Officer and appointed to the Board of Directors in February 2007. He became president of Grainger in 2006.
 
Ryan has served Grainger in increasingly responsible roles in virtually every part of the company since joining the company in 1980. He graduated from Miami University, Oxford, OH, in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science degree in business. The ERIKS group has agreed to acquire two companies in Poland: TIM Sp.j.w. with three branches in the industrial region of Poznan, and Hydro-met s.c., based in Gdynia.

MSC Industrial Launches Largest Safety Product Catalog in Its History

MSC Industrial Direct Co., Inc., Melville, NY, has launched its largest Safety Products Catalog in its company history. The new catalog has 40,000 products, a 50% increase in SKUs since the company’s 2005 catalog. Illinois Tool Works Acquires Vitronics Soltec

Illinois Tool Works Inc., Glenview, IL, has acquired VS Acquisition Holding Inc., the parent company of Vitronics Soltec Corp., Stratham, NH, a global manufacturer of equipment, software and related services used in the soldering of printed circuit boards and the packaging of semiconductor devices.
 
VS Acquisition Holding Inc. will be a wholly owned business unit of ITW and part of the company’s existing power systems and electronics businesses. ITW will continue to operate VS Acquisition Holding Inc. as a separate business under the Vitronics Soltec brand name.

Rexel Now Owns 98.6% of Hagemeyer

Paris-based Rexel now owns 98.67% of Hagemeyer NV, and shares of Hagemeyer will no longer be publicly traded as of mid-April, the companies announced.
 
In November 2007, Rexel and Hagemeyer reached an agreement for Rexel to buy the Dutch electrical distributor for roughly US$4.5 billion. Rexel has agreed to sell Hagemeyer’s North American, Asian-Pacific and select European businesses to Sonepar.

Final GDP Growth Estimate: 0.6% for Fourth Quarter

Real gross domestic product -the output of goods and services produced by labor and property in the U.S. -increased at an annual rate of 0.6% in the fourth quarter of 2007, according to final estimates released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. In the third quarter, real GDP increased 4.9%.
 
The GDP estimates released today are based on more complete source data than were available for the preliminary estimates issued last month. In the preliminary estimates, the increase in real GDP was also 0.6%.
 
The increase in real GDP in the fourth quarter primarily reflected positive contributions from personal consumption expenditures (PCE), exports, nonresidential structures, state and local government spending, and equipment and software that were largely offset by …

Durable Goods Orders Fell in February

Durable goods orders fell 1.7% in February, with nondefense capital goods orders excluding aircraft falling 2.6%, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. More details here.

Industrial Production Falls 0.5% in February

U.S. industrial production fell 0.5 percent in February after having increased 0.1 percent in January. Much of the decrease in February resulted from a weather-related drop of 3.7 percent in the output of utilities. In the manufacturing sector, output decreased 0.2 percent in February, and declines were fairly widespread across industries. The output of mines moved up 0.4 percent.

At 113.7 percent of its 2002 average, total industrial production was 1.0 percent above its year-earlier level. The capacity utilization rate for total industry in February fell 0.6 percentage point, to 80.9 percent, the lowest rate since November 2005.

Canadian Wholesale Revenues Up in January

Wholesalers shook off a disappointing December to start the New Year strong, helped in part by a price driven surge in the sale of agricultural chemicals, according to Statistics Canada.

Sales by Canadian wholesalers rose a healthy 2.6% in January to $44.1 billion, effectively offsetting the 2.6% drop recorded in December.

In January, six of the seven wholesale sectors reported higher sales, led by very strong growth in the other products” sector (+11.4%). The growth in this sector was driven by higher sales of agricultural chemicals, which also benefited from sharply higher prices during the month.
