SYSCO Sales Up 7.1% in Fiscal 2008

SYSCO Corp., Houston, TX, reported sales increased 7.1% in fiscal 2008 to $37.5 billion. Food cost inflation, as estimated by the change in cost in goods, was 6%.
 
Operating income for 2008 grew 10% over the prior year.
 
For the fourth quarter 2008, sales were up 5.4% to $9.7 billion. Operating income was up 9.7% to $559 million. Fourth-quarter profit was up to $334 million from $303 million in the prior-year period. Food cost inflation for the period was 6.2%.

Illinois Tool Works to Divest Two Businesses

Illinois Tool Works Inc., Glenview, IL, announced that its board of directors has authorized a plan to divest its Decorative Surfaces segment consisting of the Wilsonart and related laminate businesses and the Click Commerce industrial software business.
 
Wilsonart was acquired in 1999 by ITW as part of the Premark International transaction. In 2007, the decorative surfaces segment had revenues of $1.2 billion. Wilsonart manufactures and distributes custom construction products for commercial, residential and renovation applications. Products include decorative laminate, solid surface, flooring, decorative materials, adhesives and custom edges. The group has 16 business units worldwide with the majority of revenues based in North America.

Lawson Products Agrees to Settlement in Kickback Scheme

Lawson Products, Inc., Des Plaines, IL, has agreed to pay $30 million in forfeiture and restitution in the case of sales agents who according to the government systematically provided nearly $10 million in illegal incentives to government employees to buy more products at higher prices for their employers.
 
The agreement brings to a close the government’s investigation of Lawson’s former customer loyalty programs. The agreement stipulates that a criminal case of mail fraud against the company will be dismissed in three years as long as Lawson abides by all terms and conditions,” according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois.

June Machine Tool Consumption Level with May

June U.S. manufacturing technology consumption totaled $360.43 million, according to the Association For Manufacturing Technology and the American Machine Tool Distributors’Association. This total, as reported by companies participating in the USMTC program, was level with May, and up 2% from the total of $353.40 million reported for June 2007. With a year-to-date total of $2,318.34 million, 2008 is up 15.3% compared with 2007.

These numbers and all data in this report are based on the totals of actual data reported by companies participating in the USMTC program.

Sales. June 2008 sales of merchant wholesalers, except manufacturers’sales branches and offices, after adjustment for seasonal variations and trading-day differences but not for price changes, were $411.2 billion, up 2.8 percent from the revised May level and were up 17 percent from June 2007. The May preliminary estimate was revised upward $2.4 billion or 0.6 percent. June sales of durable goods were up 1.3 percent from last month and were up 9 percent from a year ago. Compared to last month, sales of computer and computer peripheral equipment and software were up 3.4 percent and sales of lumber and other construction materials were up 1.9 percent. The first two articles in this issue are indicators of how this industry is maturing. At the risk of oversimplifying, it wasn’t that long ago that success was often defined by getting orders translated accurately into invoices, then into envelopes in a timely fashion. A broken dot-matrix printer impacted cash flow! Pricing policy took shape in sales meetings, phone calls and split-second decisions on a case-by-case basis by each salesperson. Beacon Roofing Supply Sales Up 6.1% in 3Q

Beacon Roofing Supply, Inc., Peabody, MA, reported sales increased 6.1% to $514.6 million in third quarter 2008 compared with the year-ago period. Organic growth was 5.9%.
 
Residential and non-residential roofing sales increased 12.4% and 7.4%, respectively, while complementary product sales declined 11.3%. Roofing product sales benefited from a rapid rise in prices during the third quarter as well as from strong re-roofing activity in storm-affected regions and continued strength in commercial roofing activity in most markets.
 
Complementary product sales continued to be hampered by the slowdown in new residential construction.

Applied Industrial Sales Up 7.2% in 2008

Applied Industrial Technologies, Cleveland, OH, reported fiscal 2008 sales increased 3.7% to $2.1 billion from fiscal 2007. Profit rose 11% to $95 million.
 
In the fourth quarter, sales increased slightly to $529.7 million from the prior-year period. Profit was $24.4 million, down from $24.6 million last year.
 
While our financial performance was strong, we definitely saw the effect of a slowing economy during the second half of our fiscal year with only half of our top thirty industries showing positive growth,” said CEO David L. Dublin, OH-based drug distributor Cardinal Health, reported revenue for fiscal year 2008 improved 5% to $91 billion over the prior year. Profit was $1.3 billion, a 32% decrease from fiscal year 2007. Earnings for the year were negatively impacted by a $600 million expense to resolve securities litigation.
 
For the fourth quarter, sales were $22.9 billion, an increase of 3% in a year-over-year comparison. Profit was $326.6 million, a decrease of 64% from fourth quarter 2007.
