MDM Interview: Take Strategy to the Front Lines

Many leaders understand the importance of matching strategy with operations, but few companies have systems in place to actually do so, according to Robert Kaplan and David Norton, creators of the widely used Balanced Scorecard performance measurement tool and leading advocates for customer profitability analysis. Kaplan recently spoke with MDM Editor Lindsay Young about the challenges inherent with effective strategy implementation in a wholesale distribution company.

In their latest book, The Execution Premium: Linking Strategy to Operations for Competitive Advantage, Kaplan and Norton present a formal systems approach to implement strategy at every level of an organization. The authors’six steps, as shown in the graphic on page 4 of this issue, …

Canadian Building Permits Increase in July

Source: Statistics Canada

After declining 5.3% in June, the value of building permits increased 1.8% to $6.4 billion in July, mainly as a result of multi-family dwelling permits in Central Canada and industrial construction intentions in Saskatchewan.

In the residential sector, the value of building permits rose 2.7% to $3.7 billion, mainly as a result of an increase in the value of multi-family dwelling permits in Ontario, Quebec and Manitoba.
In the non-residential sector, the value of building permits edged up 0.6% to $2.7 billion. An increase in industrial construction intentions more than offset declines in both commercial and institutional permits.

Pricing, M&A in an Uncertain Economy

When it comes to making decisions in an uncertain market economy, executives sometimes throw out the processes that have brought success during the up times. According to two recent articles from The McKinsey Quarterly, that is the wrong move. Instead, executives should be aware of current market forces while at the same time moving forward under the tried and true principles that have served them well in the past.

In its recently posted article, M&A Strategies in a Down Market, McKinsey analysts say that though executives are encouraged to “invest in a downturn,” they’ve found that most executives shy away from doing so in an uncertain …

Will Global Conditions Bring Back Offshore Production?

Are global conditions at a tipping point? Should offshore production move back home -or at least closer to home? That’s what manufacturers need to consider, says this article in the McKinsey Quarterly. “Turbulent” economic winds are undermining some of the factors that pushed production offshore in the first place, according to McKinsey.

The article presents some interesting numbers, based on the fact that crude oil has risen from $28 a barrel in 2003 to more than $100 a barrel now: The cost of shipping a standard 40-foot container has tripled since 2000. Wage inflation and a weaker dollar aren’t helping matters. Wages in China have increased on …

Five industries reporting growth in August included Paper Products; Computer &Electronic Products; Miscellaneous Manufacturing; Apparel, Leather &Allied Products; and Chemical Products. The industries reporting contraction in …

Taking Stock of Inventory Practices

According to Jon Schreibfeder, president of Effective Inventory Management, distributors are taking a good hard look at their inventory management practices right now in light of uncertain economic conditions. In a recent interview with MDM, he said that effective inventory management practices can get lost in the shuffle when sales are soaring.

Schreibfeder told MDM:

“I cannot think of a sector that is not looking at their inventory and becoming more conservative about how they’re stocking products. The challenge is that they still have to have what their customers need. They’re putting in more thought and using more tools. A lot of distributors have a good set of tools in their …

Canadian Industrial Prices Index Rises 0.4% in July

Source: Statistics Canada

The Canadian price indexes for manufactured goods and raw materials registered lower monthly growth in July than in the previous four months, increasing 0.4% and 1.4% respectively, primarily as a result of the slowdown in the rise of petroleum prices.

From June to July, prices charged by Canadian manufacturers, as measured by the Industrial Product Price Index (IPPI), rose 0.4%, down from the average monthly growth rate of 1.5% observed from March to June. The increase in the index in July was almost entirely attributable to a 2.4% rise in the prices for petroleum and coal products, which was the lowest rate in five months.

The prices for products other than petroleum and coal …

Fastenal Agrees to Settlement in Wage-Hour Case

Industrial and construction supplies distributor Fastenal Company, Winona, MN, has agreed to settle a class action wage-hour lawsuit that claims Fastenal misclassified Fastenal employees as assistant managers and as a result those employees were denied overtime as required under the Fair Labor Standards Act and several state statutes.

Two former employees originally filed the suit against Fastenal on Oct. 18, 2007. Fastenal has agreed to pay $10 million in cash to cover claims by eligible class members, plaintiff attorneys’ fees and costs and payments to named plaintiffs. The settlement is still subject to court approval.

The Sticky Areas of the Fair Labor Standards Act

Fastenal has announced an agreement to settle a wage-hour lawsuit filed against it toward the end of 2007. Wage-hour law can be a tricky area for employers, as we reported in our premium content newsletter back in October when the lawsuit was filed. In light of Fastenal’s settlement, it’s probably worth revisiting that report.

One lawyer from the national employment law firm Fisher &Phillips told me at that time that it’s not unusual to see legal problems arise from confusion over the exemption status of certain workers, as Fastenal has recently seen. So-called “white-collar” exemptions depend in part on what kind of work the employee is …
