Housing Starts Fall Slightly in February

The U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development jointly announced the following new residential construction statistics for February 2008:

Building Permits
Privately-owned housing units authorized by building permits in February were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 978,000. This is 7.8 percent below the revised January rate of 1,061,000 and is 36.5 percent below the revised February 2007 estimate of 1,541,000.
 
Single-family authorizations in February were at a rate of 639,000; this is 6.2 percent below the January figure of 681,000. Authorizations of units in buildings with five units or more were at a rate of 295,000 in February.

Wholesale Prices Rise 0.3% in February

 

Wholesale prices rose 0.3 percent in February, seasonally adjusted, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. This increase followed a 1.0-percent advance in January and a 0.3-percent decline in December. At the earlier stages of processing, prices received by manufacturers of intermediate goods moved up 0.8 percent in February subsequent to a 1.4-percent advance in January, and the crude goods index rose 3.7 percent after climbing 2.5 percent in the prior month.

Within finished goods, the index for energy goods increased 0.8 percent in February compared with a 1.5-percent gain in the previous month. Prices for consumer foods declined 0.5 percent following a 1.7-percent rise in January. By contrast, …

Illinois Tool Works Inc.  reported operating revenues went up 13.8% for the three months ended Feb. 29, 2008, due to contributions from acquisitions.

Wolseley Sales Hit by U.S. Housing Slump

Wolseley revenues for the six months ended Jan. 31, 2008, increased 2% to £8.02 billion (US$16 billion at current exchange rates) Profit fell 23.1% for the period primarily due to losses at Stock Building Supply in the U.S.

Where Stock is concerned, the market has deteriorated considerably. It’s beyond anything that we’ve experienced, in my view, since World War II. Saint-Gobain Finalizes Acquisition of Maxit

Saint-Gobain has finalized its acquisition of the Maxit group from HeidelbergCement. The cost of the transaction is €2,091 million. Maxit is a manufacturer of industrial mortars and had sales of €1,338 million in 2007, up 8.2%.

The deal nearly doubles the size of Saint-Gobain’s industrial mortars business and is part of its strategy to develop a stronger presence in construction markets. Maxit has 103 plants in 30 countries.

International Wire Sales Fall in 4Q

International Wire Group, Inc., Camden, NY, reported sales for the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, 2007, were down 3.9% to $176.7 million. The decrease was primarily due to an increase in tolled copper volumes, but was partially offset by greater sales volume, higher customer pricing/mix and the impact of a stronger euro versus the U.S. dollar.

Excluding the effects of slightly higher copper prices and an increased level of tolled copper, net sales increased $5.6 million.

Profit was $2.5 million for the three months, up $1.6 million.

Electrical supplies distributor Hagemeyer is expanding to accommodate business growth in the Greenville-Spartanburg area. The new location in Greenville adds to Hagemeyer’s 300 locations across the U.S.

Alcoa Acquires Fastener Manufacturers

New York-based Alcoa Inc. has acquired Republic Fastener Manufacturing Corp. and Van Petty Manufacturing. The two aerospace fastener manufacturing businesses are in Newbury Park, CA, and employ a combined 240 people.
 
Since it was founded in 1968, Republic has maintained its focus on the super standard” end of the aerospace fastener locknut product line. Along with its “Boots Aircraft Division”acquired from Cherry Fasteners in 1989, Republic offers a wide variety of sheet metal and wrenchable aerospace fasteners used by every major airframe manufacturer around the world.

Wholesalers’ Confidence Drops in Latest Small Business Research Survey

Concerns about the economy and a steep drop in plans for hiring led to a steep decline in the confidence of distribution and wholesale companies during the fourth quarter of 2007, according to the latest Small Business Research Board report.
 
The study indicated that the Distribution &Wholesale Small Business Confidence Index dropped to 31 during the fourth quarter or 10 points (nearly 25%) from the 41 recorded during the prior quarter. The third quarter 2007 report was the first wholesale and distribution industry confidence index issued by the Small Business Research Board.
 
Declines in two of the three major categories comprising the confidence index contributed to the lower fourth quarter results.

Bossard Group Sales Rise 7.4% in 2007

Swiss fasteners distributor Bossard Group reported sales in 2007 were up 7.4% to CHF 601 million (US$587.9 million at current exchange rates) from the year before. The sales increase is due to organic growth.
 
Sales in Europe were up 16.3%, with strongest gains in Southern Europe (+37%), and Eastern Europe (30%).
 
In the U.S. sales fell 3%. The company reported: The restructuring program launched in fall 2006 was completed on schedule and within budget at end 2007. It is already showing results: Costs were cut by 29% and the scattered U.S. operations concentrated, thus reducing company locations by two-thirds.” The 3% sales decline was better than the company’s forecast 10-11% fall.

RBC Bearings Acquires AID Corp. & BEMD Inc.

RBC Bearings Inc., Oxford, CT, manufacturer of precision plain, roller and ball bearings for the industrial, defense and aerospace industries, has acquired A.I.D. Corporation and BEMD, Inc. for $5.9 million in cash and assumed liabilities.
 
AID/BEMD, in Clayton and Canton, GA, respectively, manufacture integrated bearing assemblies and aircraft components for the commercial and defense aerospace markets. The two companies generated combined revenues of $12 million for the year ended Dec. 31, 2007.

Kaman to Acquire Industrial Supply Corp.

Kaman Corp., Bloomfield, CT, today announced that its subsidiary, Kaman Industrial Technologies Corp., has agreed to acquire Industrial Supply Corp., Richmond, VA. ISC will become part of Kaman’s industrial distribution segment. ISC has annual sales of about $55 million.

Kaman Industrial Technologies had $700 million in sales in 2007.

U.S. Foodservice Buys Clark National’s South Bend, IN, Division

Rosemont, IL-based U.S. Foodservice, foodservice distributor, has completed its pending transaction with Clark National, Inc. to acquire certain key operating assets of Clark’s South Bend, IN, broadline foodservice distribution business.
 
U.S. Foodservice plans to service former Clark South Bend customers from the U.S. Foodservice distribution locations in Indianapolis, Indiana and Bensenville, IL.
 
The decision to divest our South Bend division is consistent with our niche strategy and enables us to focus exclusively on our packaging/jan-san and specialty foodservice businesses across the U.S.,” said Clark’s President and CEO Donald Hindman. Building Materials Holding Corp. Sales Fall 29% in 2007

San Francisco, CA-based Building Materials Holding Corp., a provider of building materials and construction services to professional residential builders and contractors, reported sales for the fourth quarter 2007 fell 30% to $419 million. For the year, sales decreased 29% to $2.3 billion from $3.2 billion in 2006.
 
Net loss for the fourth quarter of 2007 was $331.3 million compared with profit of $4.5 million in the same quarter a year ago.
 
Net loss for the year was $312.7 million compared with profit of $102.1 million in 2006.

January Machine Tool Consumption Down 26% from December

January U.S. manufacturing technology consumption totaled $308.73 million, according to the American Machine Tool Distributors’Association and the Association for Manufacturing Technology. This total, as reported by companies participating in the USMTC program, was down 26.1% from December, and down 4.0% from the total of $321.50 million reported for January 2007.

These numbers and all data in this report are based on the totals of actual data reported by companies participating in the USMTC program.

U.S. PT/MC Sales Up 7.6% in January

After a two-month decline in U.S. distributors’sales of PT/MC products, January sales were up 7.6% compared to December 2007, according to the latest Power Transmission Distributors Association January 2008 trend data report.  When matched up against sales in January 2007, sales in January 2008 gained 4.5%. 
 
Accounts receivable collection days were down 2.8% in January 2008 after an increase in December 2007.  For January 2008, the confidence index of U.S. distributors remained flat at 5.8 (on a 10-point scale).
 
Canadian distributors posted positive gains in PT/MC sales, rising 7.7% in January 2008. Sales growth over the same period last year was down 0.7%.  Days sales in account receivables dropped 12.5% as compared to December 2007.  …

Flowserve Buys Remaining Shares of Japanese Company

Flowserve Corp., Dallas, TX, supplier of fluid motion and control products and services, has acquired the remaining 50% of shares of Niigata Worthington in Kawasaki, Kanagawa, Japan.

Flowserve previously owned 50% of Niigata Worthington in a long-term joint venture.
 
Niigata Worthington, a manufacturer of certain Flowserve pumps and other rotating equipment, reported sales of $64 million in 2007.
