SPX Corp. to Buy APV for $510M

SPX Corp., Charlotte, NC, has agreed to buy APV, a global manufacturer of process equipment and engineered solutions primarily for the sanitary market, for 250 million British pounds (US$510 million). APV is a division of Invensys plc, an industrial automation, transportation and controls group based in London.
&nbsp ;
APV will become a part of SPX’s flow technology segment. APV’s primary products include pumps, valves, heat exchangers and homogenizers for the food, dairy, beverage and pharmaceutical industries. Revenues for APV were $800 million for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2007.

Lawson Products Sales Up Slightly in 3Q

Lawson Products, Inc., Des Plaines, IL, a distributor of products to the maintenance, repair and operations and original equipment manufacturers, reported sales from continuing operations in the third quarter ended Sept. 30, 2007, were $127.9 million, up $0.6 million from the comparable prior-year period. Profit was $2.4 million.

Third quarter 2007 results include severance costs of $3.7 million related to several executive departures and re-alignment of the company’s sales management.

Rockwell Collins Sales Up 13% in Fiscal 2007

Rockwell Collins, Inc., Cedar Rapids, IA, reported profit for the fiscal year ended Sept. 30, 2007, of $585 million, an increase of 23% over fiscal year 2006. Fiscal year 2007 revenues increased 14%, to $4.42 billion. Organic revenue growth was 13%.

For the fiscal year 2007 fourth quarter, profit increased 13% to $156 million. Revenues increased $165 million, or 16%, to $1.23 billion from revenues of $1.06 billion last year.

NAHB: Housing Market Should Stabilize in 2008

Though there is currently downward momentum" in the housing market right now, the downswing is poised to move back up again in 2008, economists at a recent National Association of Home Builders forecast conference said.

The economists gave these reasons:

  • The overall economy and job growth continue to move ahead at a decent pace;
  • Core inflation is under control;
  • The late-summer credit crunch in mortage markets is easing; and
  • And the supply-demand equation will balance out as builders "whittle down" excess inventory.

Advance Estimates Put 3Q GDP Growth at 3.9%

Real gross domestic product -the output of goods and services produced by labor and property in the U.S. -increased at an annual rate of 3.9% in the third quarter 2007, according to advance estimates released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. In the second quarter, real GDP increased 3.8%.
&nbsp ;
The Bureau emphasized that the third-quarter advance” estimates are based on source data that are incomplete or subject to further revision by the source agency. The third-quarter “preliminary” estimates, based on more comprehensive data, will be released on Nov. 29, 2007.

September Construction Spending Slightly Below 2006

Construction spending in September 2007 was estimated at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $1,162.8 billion, 0.3% above the revised August estimate. The September figure is 0.8% below the September 2006 estimate.

During the first nine months of this year, construction spending was $872.2 billion, 3.2% below the same period in 2006.

Spending on private construction was at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $869.0 billion, 0.2% below the revised August estimate. Industrial Distribution Group, Inc., Atlanta, GA, reported sales fell 3% to $134.3 million in the third quarter ended Sept. 30, 2007. Profit was $1.3 million, compared with profit of $1.8 million in the prior-year period.

Kaydon Acquires Avon Bearings for $55M

Kaydon Corp., Ann Arbor, MI, has acquired Ohio-based Avon Bearings Corp. for $55 million in cash. Avon is expected to add $30 million to Kaydon’s fiscal 2008 sales.

Simpson Manufacturing Sales Fall 4.2% in 3Q

Simpson Manufacturing Co., Inc., Pleasanton, CA, reported sales in the third quarter 2007 fell 4.2% to $217.3 million from the prior-year period. &nbsp ; Profit decreased 16.4% to $22.6 million for the third quarter 2007.

In the first nine months of 2007, sales decreased 6.1% to $641.7 million and profit fell 18.6% to $68.3 million.

Illinois Tools Works to Buy Cement Materials Supplier

FLSmidth of Denmark has agreed to sell Densit A/S to Illinois Tool Works Inc.

FLSmidth wants to refocus its operations on Cement and Minerals. Densit was one of the Group’s final remaining non-core units.

Densit employs 68 people, and its turnover in 2006 amounted to DKK 144m (EUR 19m/US$27 million). Densit produces cement-based special-purpose materials used in the security industry, for wear protection, for industrial flooring and for reinforcement of offshore drilling rigs and offshore wind turbine foundations. The company also produces wear-resistant components for the cement and power-generating industries.

Building Materials Suppliers Hit in 3Q

Building Materials Holding Corporation, San Francisco, CA, a provider of construction services and building materials to residential builders and contractors, reported sales for the third quarter 2007 fell 24% to $618 million from $818 million in the same quarter a year ago. For the nine months, sales decreased 28% to $1.9 billion from the same period a year ago.

Sequa Corp., New York, NY, reported sales of $572.1 million in the third quarter ended Sept. 30, 2007, up 3.1%. For the first nine months of 2007, Sequa’s sales increased 1% to $1.7 billion. Profit for the nine-month period was $44.3 million, compared with $42.1 million in the same period a year ago.

One quarter of the acquisition of Linde’s packaged gas operations accounted for up to half of that increase.

Report: Industrial Manufacturing Optimism Index Falls

The following findings from PricewaterhouseCoopers’Manufacturing Barometer, a quarterly survey, are based on interviews conducted between August 1, 2007, and October 12, 2007, with 60 senior executives of large, multinational U.S. industrial manufacturing companies.

Optimism Falls Sharply Among Industrial Manufacturing Executives
Optimism in the U.S. economy dropped significantly among industrial manufacturers during the third quarter of this year according to PricewaterhouseCoopers’Manufacturing Barometer. Less than half of those surveyed, 45%, are optimistic about the domestic economy, a 17-point drop from the 62% level of optimism reported last quarter.

DXP Enterprises 3Q Organic Growth at 14.5%

DXP Enterprises, Inc., Houston, TX, reported profit of $4.5 million for the third quarter ending Sept. 30, 2007, compared with profit of $2.9 million in the third quarter 2006. Sales increased 56.6% to $106.8 million from $68.2 million for the third quarter of 2006. Sales by the businesses acquired since July 1, 2006, accounted for $28.7 million of the sales increase.

Swedish industrial supplier Trelleborg AB reported organic growth of 12% in the third quarter 2007. Operating profit was up by 49%.

Overall sales were up 18% to SEK7.5 billion (US$1.17 billion), and to SEK23.2 billion (US$3.6 billion) for the first nine months of 2007.

A bidding war has possibly been avoided in the fight for Dutch electrical/industrial distributor Hagemeyer’s global assets. Rexel just bid nearly $4.3 billion for the company, but plans to only keep a little over half of Hagemeyer when all is said and done. Sonepar has agreed to buy the rest.

In an interesting twist, French-based distributor Rexel has made an offer to acquire Hagemeyer, and has agreed to sell certain assets of Hagemeyer to Sonepar if its offer is accepted.

The move eliminates the possibility of a bidding war between the two electrical distribution giants. It also plays down the risk of buying the entire company.
