Tip: Be Intentional with Culture to Avoid Dysfunction

A company culture that is constantly evolving and dynamic is integral to a productive workforce, according to Troy Meachum, president of ACR Supply, Durham, NC, in Millennials in Distribution: Culture Trumps Everything.

“With culture, you have to be intentional with it every single day,” Meachum says. “So it’s always evolving. I know we are always working on it, and we let people go even recently that don’t fit into the culture or don’t contribute to it.”

Twenty years ago, Meachum and other top executives at ACR sat down to address company culture with two simple questions: “What does the future look like, and how are we going to get there?”

Theyreimagined a company culture where the executive leadership would be more intentional about creating a family atmosphere and where employees would be asked to contribute by continually asking themselves, “What’s broke and how can we fix it?”

“I believe in change,” Meachum says. “So we just identified dysfunction, and we began to systematically help people change. That was the turning point, and that’s when we really begin to focus on the culture.”
